Service Description

RealMe® login is a secure all-of-government service that lets customers access multiple online services across agencies with the same username and password. The service is designed to protect privacy and security and is officially backed by the government as a secure common capability.

Customers wanting to access a service are transferred to the RealMe login service. After authenticating successfully, they are passed back to the service agency to continue the transaction.  Further functionality is also available, including moderate strength logins (where the user receives a RealMe code by hardware token or TXT message, which they also enter to login) and single sign-on.

RealMe gives individuals control over what information they share and when they share it. Consent must be given for an organisation to hold an individual’s information and to share it with another organisation. The information shared between organisations is not stored by the RealMe service. RealMe only holds the information needed to manage the account. The official information continues to be held by the government departments or organisations that already hold it.

More than1.25 million RealMe logins have been created and they have been used more than 19 million times.

This level of RealMe service does not provide identity information. Upgrading to a verified RealMe account, allows customers to use their RealMe login as their online ID.

Delivery

RealMe is the result of a government backed partnering arrangement between The Department of Internal Affairs and New Zealand Post Ltd. Datacom is contracted to provide and support the technical solution.

The Department of Internal Affairs manages RealMe and provides integration support and collateral to assist agencies to implement the RealMe login service.  A flowchart showing the transition process is attached below in the additional information section.

Benefits

The RealMe login service allows organisations to reuse a secure, privacy-protective and standards-compliant authentication service that is supported around the clock 365 days a year. It is a single-fee service so agencies only pay for the customers who use it. 

RealMe increases uptake of online services by:

  • Improving user experience with a single login for multiple services and agencies and providing the opportunity to easily complete more transactions online
  • Enabling new and more innovative online services to meet customer demand
  • Enabling joint and integrated service delivery across government in line with government’s vision of moving services to digital channels
  • Reducing the cost of implementing and running standards-compliant online services by providing a common capability for all of government
  • Eliminating customer waiting time as the technology works instantly and automatically over the internet.

Adopting the service

Agencies wanting to use RealMe must first contact the RealMe Business Development Manager who will talk them through the adoption process.

RealMe requires A SAML 2.0 product, the international standard that powers the messaging between the RealMe service and service and security certificates to ensure the services are secure. The Department of Internal Affairs supply a vendors list for this capability if needed.

Internal Affairs provides support and advisory services to assist the selection of the best integration approach to fit business needs, including an identity related risk assessment service in line with the Evidence of Identity Standard.

The initiating document is the Project Charter which establishes the integration project. The RealMe General & Key Terms or an Additional Services Letter need to be signed prior to the service going live. The agency is responsible for transitioning the service.
