Case studies and benchmarking

We’ve showcased early adopters of cloud services to encourage agencies to accelerate their adoption. We’ve also provided benchmarking information on cloud adoption.

Office productivity services

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) implemented Microsoft's Office 365 service as its foundation public cloud service in October 2016. NZQA was one of the first agencies to take advantage of the July 2016 change to the Cloud First policy that allowed agencies to use office productivity services hosted overseas. A case study of their journey is available here: Accelerating Public Cloud - NZQA (PDF, 157KB)

Improving resiliency

Statistics NZ had a two year plan to move from a legacy, on-premises IT environment to a mix of ICT common capabilities and public cloud services.

The November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake acted as a catalyst to accelerate the delivery of this plan in response to urgent business continuity challenges. A case study of their journey is available here: Accelerating Public Cloud – Stats NZ (PDF, 60KB)

Creating a cloud plan

Although ACC knew of Cabinet’s requirement to have a cloud plan, it had already grasped the value of having one to help drive its overall business transformation.

ACC’s plan is aimed at decision-makers outside the IT Teams and is used to engage these people in a strategic dialogue about the role of cloud in driving transformation. A case study of their cloud plan is available here: Accelerating Public Cloud – ACC (PDF, 38KB)

2016 agency cloud adoption benchmark

Agency CIOs responded to an October 2016 survey about their intentions to use public cloud services. Many agencies indicated a high appetite to adopt public cloud services and regard them as very important for digital transformation.

The survey indicated that the key drivers for adopting public cloud services are increased mobility, improved collaboration, and greater agility.
