Unpack the problem or opportunity


It is important to understand the opportunity and the benefits from the (possibly differing) perspectives of the Prepare team members, the customers, and any other stakeholders.


The aim for this stage is to clearly state the opportunity at a high level, including:

  • what the opportunity is
  • the main aspects of it
  • the benefits to the stakeholders.

This description of the opportunity will be expanded during Discover.


Actions which may be carried out during this stage include:

  1. Prepare a clear high-level statement of the problem.
  2. Write a problem statement – the problem trajectory tool may be used for this.
  3. Add material from the problem statement to the concept brief.
  4. Review the current concept brief with stakeholders.

Tools and templates

Tools that may be helpful during this stage include:

  • problem trajectory tool
  • putting the problem in context
  • listening to the customer
  • concept brief
  • root cause analysis (such as Ishikawa or 5 Whys)
  • investment logic mapping (ILM).
