Government Chief Privacy Officer

Russell Burnard is the Government Chief Privacy Officer (GCPO). He leads an all-of-government approach to privacy, and is responsible for four main functions: 

  • providing leadership, by setting the vision for privacy across government
  • building capability
  • assurance
  • engaging with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, and citizens.

State sector Chief Executives remain accountable for privacy within their agencies, including being accountable to the Privacy Commissioner in the event of any breach of privacy law within their agency.

The GCPO will develop standards, issue guidance and provide assurance to support public service to build capability in privacy and security management.
